AN ....N D AMENDMENT NO. 1 MAY 1996 TO IS 9811 : 1981 SPECIFICATION FOR CANNED KUNDRI (Page 3, Foreword, clause 0.4 ) -Insert the following new clause after 0.4 and renumber the subsequent clause: '0.5 A scheme for labelling environment friendly products known as ECC-Mark bas been introduced at tbe instance of tbe Ministry of Environment and Forests (MEf), Government of India. The ECc-Mark sball be admimstered by tbe Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under lbe HIS Act, 1986 as per Ibe Resolution No. 71 dated 20 February 1991 and Resolution No. 425 dated 28 October 1992 publisbed in tbe Gazelle of the Government of India. For a product to be eligible for marking with the ECO-Mark il sball also carry the Standard Mark of BIS for quality besides meeting additional environment friendly (Ef) requirements. The environment friendly requirements for canned KUNDRI are, tberefore, included tbrough Amendment No. Ito tbis standard. This amendment is based on lhe Gazette Notification No. 624 (E) dated 6 September 1995 for Labelling Beverages, Infant Foods, Processed Fruits ami Vegetable Products as environment friendly, publisbed in !be Gazelle of tbe Government of India. ' (Page 7, clause 5.5.5) - Insert tbe followmg new mailer after 5.5.5: ··5.6 Additional Requirements Cor ECO·Mark 5.6.1 General Requirements 5.6.1.1 The product sball conform to tbe requirements prescribed under 5.1 to 5.5.5. 5.6.1.2 The manufacturer shall produce the consent clearance as per the provisions of Water (PCP) Act, 1974, Water (PCP) Cess Act, 1977 and AIr (PCP) Ac~ 1981 along wrth lbe authorisanon if requrred under Envtronmem (Protection) Act, 1986 and tbe Rules made tbereunder to the Bureau of Indian Standards wbile applying for the ECD-Mark and the product sball also be in accordance witb Ibe Prevention of Food Adukeration Act, 1954 and tbe Rules made thereunder. Additionally, FPO 1955 (Frun Product Order) framed under Essenual Commoduies Act, 1955, Standards ofWeights and Measures Act, 1977 requirements wherever applicable bas 10 be complied with. 1 Amend No.1 to IS 9811 : 1981 5.6.1.3 The product/packaging may also display in brief the criteria based on wbich the product his been labelled environment friendly. 5.6.1.4 The material used for product/picking shall be recyclable or biodegradable. 5.6.1.5 The date of manufacture Ind dlte of expiry shall be declared on the producVplckage by tbe manufacturer. 5.6.1.6 The product sball be microbiologically safe when tested as per IS 5403 : 1969 'Metbod for yeast and mould count of foodstuffs' and IS 5887 (Part 5) : 1976 'Methods for detection of bacteria responsible for food poisoning: Part 5 Isolation, Identification and enumeration of Yibno Cholerae Ind Vibrw Parahaemolyticus (fust revlSWII )' and shall be free from bacterial Ind fungal toxins. 5.6.1.7 The pesticide residues, if any in the product shall not exceed the limit as prescribed in PFA Act, 1954 and the rules made thereunder. 5.6.1.8 The product/package or leaflet accompanying it may display instructions of proper use, storage and transport ( including refrigeration temperature compliance) so as 10 maxinuse the product performance, safety and minimise wastage. 5.6.2 Specific Requirements 5.6.2.1 The product sball not contain any of the heavy metal contaminants in excess of the quantities prescribed 10 Table 2." In order to ensure quality of the product It IS necessarv to have stuct quality control based on specifications. SCOPE 1.1 ThIS standard prescnbes the requirements for KUNDRI ( Coccinia cordifolia Cogn ) 2. TERMINOLOGY 2.0 For the purpose of this standard, the following defimtrons shall apply. The water capacity of the con tamer is the volume of distilled water at 20·C which the sealed container will hold when completely filled. 2.2 Drained Mass - The mass of the product obtained after cutting open the can and drainmg the product (see 7 of IS : 2860-1964· ). 2.3 Absence of Defects - The degree of freedom from extraneous material, such as stalk, yellow or pmkish hard seeds and also freedom from damage due to mechanical injury. 2.3.1 Blemished Units - Uruts that have some injury, such as worm hole, insect damage, physiological disorder; or other abnormality such as sun burn, scab, or enzyme activity on the surface, readily visrble to the naked eye to a noticeable degree Uneven drstrrbunon of pigment and change III colour normally associated with processing shall not be considered as defects. 2.3.2 Disintegrated Unit- The unit that has lost the normal shape or forms or from which portions have separated. 2.4 Can - Round open top sanitary Cans conforming to IS: 9396.1979t. 3. STYLES 3.1 KUNDRI used for canmng should have top and hottom end removed. They may have a logitudmal slit. 4. GRADES 4.1 Canned KUNDRI shall be of two grades, namely, Grade I and Grade 2. 5. REQUIREMENTS 5.1 Hygienic Requirements - The matenal shall be prepared and handled under strict hygienic condiuons (see 15: 6542-l972t ) by persons free from contagious and mfectious diseases and only in premises rnaintamed III a thoroughly clean and hygienic condition and having adequate and safe water supply. All workers shall use clean. white, washed clothing. Necessary precautions shall be taken to prevent mcidental contamination of the product from SOIled equipment or from personnel suffering from mjunes, 5.1.1 All equipment coming in contact wah raw materials or products in the course of manufacture shall be kept clean. IS : 9811 · 1981 7. SAMPLING 7.1 Representative samples of the matenal shall be drawn and tested for conformity to this standard by the method prescnbed in 3 of IS : 28601964$. 8. TESTS 8.1 The samples of canned KUNDRI shall be tested for ascertainmg conformity of the material to the requirements of the specification by the method prescribed in Appendix A and the relevant clauses of IS: 28601964* and Appendix B of IS: 7732-1975t as given In col 4 and 5 of Table 2. APPENDIX A [ Clause 5.5 ( c ) ] METHOD OF SCORING A-I. APPARATUS A-I.l White Porcelain Bowls - big enough to hold the contents of the can under exammation, A-I.:! Stainless Steel Spoons - table spoons (see IS : 990-1964t l. A-'. PROCEDURE A-l.I Paonel of Judges - Scoring of the product shall be done by a panel of three to five judges. All the judges consutuung a panel shall be conversant with the factors governing the quahty of the product. The cans shall be opened and the contents poured separately into white porcelain bowls. Each judge shall mdependently examme the conterts from each of the cans and assign scores for different characterisncs. A-2.I.I The Judges shall consider the followmg charactenstrcs: Colour. texture and uniformny of SIze. taste and lJavour, and absence of defects. A-l.3 System of Scoring - The vanations withm each factor are so descnbed that the scores may be ascertained for each factor and expressed numerically The relative Importance of each factor has been expressed numerically on a scale of 100. A-2.3 Ascertaining the Score A-2.3.1 Agreement Among Judges ~ To ascertain the consistency of Judgement among the Judges, the total score assrgned by each of them for the contents of the same can shall be calculated by addrng up the score for the various md.vrdual characteristics. If the difference between the maximum and the rmrumum of tie total score 50 obtained does not exceed ( K + 5 ). where K IS the number of judges, the score shall be deemed as consrstent for the can under consideranon. If the difference exceeds ( K + 5), the most outlymg score. that is, the one whtch IS farthest from its immediate neighbour ( the scores being arranged in one order), shall be discarded and the consistency among the remaining Judges shall be examined.
